Two seats in the same economy cabin can offer noticeably different space, and the variation is not accidental. Regulation, aircraft structure and pricing each carve the cabin into distinct zones.

Pitch is a measurement of rows, not legs

Seat pitch describes the distance from one point on a seat to the same point on the seat ahead. It is a spacing figure, so it includes the seat itself.

Actual legroom therefore depends heavily on how thick the seatback is. A slimline seat at a modest pitch can leave more usable knee space than a thicker seat at a larger one.

This is why comparisons between airlines using pitch alone mislead. The same number describes generous space on one aircraft and cramped space on another with older, deeper seats.

Exit rows are shaped by evacuation rules

Rows beside an emergency exit must leave a clear path wide enough for an orderly evacuation, and that requirement is written into certification rather than chosen by the airline.

The result is extra space that the airline did not design for comfort but can sell as if it were. The passenger benefit is a side effect of a safety margin.

The same rule explains the restrictions attached to those seats. Occupants must be able to operate the exit, which rules out small children, and bags must be stowed overhead rather than underfoot.

Structure fixes some rows in place

Wing boxes, galley walls, lavatory modules and door frames sit at fixed stations along the fuselage. Seats have to be arranged around them, which produces rows with unusual spacing.

Some of those rows gain space, such as a bulkhead row with no seat in front. Others lose it, like a row ahead of a lavatory whose seat cannot recline.

Window alignment varies for the same reason. Windows are placed at regular intervals in the fuselage, so once seat rows drift out of step with them, some seats end up beside a blank wall.

Revenue design does the rest

Once space varies for physical reasons, airlines formalise it. Front rows, exit rows and aisle seats are priced separately, turning a structural quirk into a product with tiers.

Some carriers go further and fit a small block of seats at a larger pitch, sold as a premium economy cabin. The extra inches come from removing a row elsewhere.

The trade is visible in the total seat count. Every seat added to a cabin reduces the average space slightly, and every premium row removes seats an airline must recover through fares.

Density is chosen route by route

The same aircraft type can leave the factory in several layouts, and an airline picks one for the flying it expects the aircraft to do over many years.

Leisure routes with price-sensitive passengers usually get the denser configuration. Business routes keep more space because the passengers paying the highest fares expect it and will switch carriers over it.

Because layouts are expensive to change, a cabin often reflects an airline's plan from several years earlier. Aircraft moved onto a new route carry the seating decision made for the old one.
